Benjamin FRANKLIN ( –)
Benjamin FRANKLIN fut l’un des rédacteurs de la déclaration d’indépendance des treize colonies nord-américaines. Il est considéré, à de multiples titres, comme l’un des pères fondateurs des États-Unis.
Conscient de la nécessité d’un soutien militaire venant de l’extérieur, le Congrès de l’indépendance désigna Benjamin FRANKLIN comme premier ambassadeur en France des treize colonies d’Amérique nouvellement indépendantes à partir de la fin 1776 et jusqu’à 1785. Ce fut lui qui négocia l’aide de la France en faveur des Insurgents américains [1] qui permit la victoire des colons américains en 1783. Il était le plus célèbre des Américains à Paris, et aussi adulé par une opinion conquise à l’idée de liberté.
Il rendait lui-même bien à la France l’amour qu’elle avait pour lui, puisque c’est à lui que nous devons le plus bel hommage jamais rendu à la France [2] :
« Tout homme a deux patries : la sienne et puis la France. »
